A Night at the Hermitage: Art Across Boundaries
On Saturday evening, August 24, the Hermitage‑Siberia Center went far beyond a traditional exhibition space — it became a catwalk, a concert venue, and a meditation zone. The six‑hour program revealed to guests a modern museum seamlessly blending with a wide range of art forms.
Gold of the Steppes
The staircases of the majestic 1914 building are ready to welcome guests
Many will start their visit with the exhibition “Gold of the Ancient Steppes”
The highlight of this display is the treasures from Peter the Great’s Siberian Collection
Two halls tell the story of the life and culture of the Scythians and related nomadic tribes
Guided tours help visitors grasp the scale of the archaeological research conducted
Finds were made across a vast area, from the Northern Black Sea region to Altai and the Minusinsk basin
Around 600 items showcase the craftsmanship of ancient artisans
Even fragments of clothing over two thousand years old have been preserved in the permafrost
Display cases sit alongside sculptural reconstructions of our ancestors’ appearance
Ethnic Style on the Catwalk
Let’s head to the inner courtyard — several events are scheduled there
The Omsk Art Residence program drew the attention of dozens of spectators
The “Image” Fashion Theatre presented several original outfits to the audience
But the fashion show was just a prologue to the lecture “Ethnic Style on the Catwalk”
Listening to a speaker with an academic background is interesting for the models…
…and, of course, for the museum visitors
The speaker is Marina Timofeeva, Professor at the Costume Design Department of the local university
She demonstrated how echoes of the past appear in the everyday clothing we wear today
The cozy courtyard is full of details that remind you how special this place is
Egg‑Headed People
Another lecture of the evening attracted far more listeners than the hall could hold
It was delivered by Igor Skandakov, Director of the Omsk Museum of Education
Its title is “The Egg‑Headed People: Fact and Fiction”
The archaeologist personally discovered these unusual burials in northern Omsk Region in the 1990s
He proposed a hypothesis: the tradition of skull deformation was brought to Siberia by the Huns
The scholar also showcased volumes of expedition documentation
Soviet Art
In separate halls, the exhibition “I Know No Other Country Like This” is on display
It marks the centenary of the USSR’s founding in 1922
Here you can see around 200 works by artists from all the union republics
The geography spans from Central Asia and Transcaucasia to the Baltics and, of course, Russia
The foundation of both painters’ and sculptors’ work is strict socialist realism
This somewhat forgotten style stands in stark contrast to the abstraction of contemporary art
It celebrates the beauty of the human figure and reflects the achievements of the era
The emotional works of Soviet authors don’t need many interpretations
Even Lenin in the expressive portrait by Omsk artist Nikolai Bryukhanov is instantly recognizable
Folk Concert
The courtyard is packed again: the creative group “Clover” is performing
The project’s ideologist and artistic director is Evgenia Amartseva
The artists impress with the sound of unusual instruments…
…and easily imitate the most extraordinary sounds of nature
Being able to play more than one folk instrument is the norm for them
Their repertoire features little‑known but incredibly lively songs from various regions
Their heartfelt performance makes you eagerly soak in every note
Meanwhile, the “Meadow Tales” concert includes not only songs but also catchy rhymes and quips
Some parts are rehearsed, others are improvised — and they gracefully complement each other
The musicians call themselves “Bearers of the traditional singing charge”
Interaction with the audience is going smoothly

Gong Meditation
Exactly at midnight, the final part of the program begins
It’s a gong meditation with Tibetan singing bowls
The gong’s sound is spacious, textured, relaxing, and penetrates deep into the mind
Sound therapy master Dmitry Kundyus creates vibrations and controls the rhythm
In the front rows are connoisseurs of this ancient practice
Only live sound can have a truly meditative effect on a person
The six‑hour marathon took place in the year marking the centenary of the Mikhail Vrubel Museum
