Red Hill: Heralding the Arrival of Summer
Yalutorovsk kicks off the season with its own big folk festival: Cossack games, celebrations for golden wedding couples, a meter‑long pancakes, and a giant scrambled egg show. The packed program brought to us by “Art‑Voyage” Cultural Center draws hundreds of locals and tourists.
Red Hill (Krasnaya Gorka in Russian) is a traditional East Slavic spring folk festival after Easter.
Prologue
The venue — Sretenskaya Square, the historic heart of Yalutorovsk
The gloomy sky can’t dim the joy of the first warmth and the promise of a hot summer ahead

Cossack Games
Cossack games are fun for all ages
Today, everyone can try to slice a water bottle with a saber
“Did I really succeed on the first try?” Joy and surprise overwhelm the girl
Even the little ones eagerly join this new game
With an experienced mentor by your side, there’s nothing to fear
The target is hit!
Since the bottom part of the bottle stays in place, one more strike is needed
Unfortunately, perfect accuracy isn’t guaranteed every time
Finally, the saber ends up in an adult’s hands
A masterful, calm strike — and the splashes form a whimsical pattern
According to the rules, as we already know, a follow‑up try is required in such cases
Skill and belief in success have always been highly valued among the Cossacks
Tug‑of‑war is another traditional pastime at folk festivals
The men give it their all, while the women cheer them on and capture the moments
No matter who wins, the contest always ends with fraternizing
Golden Wedding Couples
The local authorities honor the couples who have been married for fifty years or more
Their children and grandchildren join in the official congratulations
Each such happy family is a vast family tree in itself
A waltz is performed especially for them — it probably brings back the memories of their first dates
It’s as if those fifty years never happened!
Even the playful bench seems to draw in the couples celebrating their golden wedding
Concert and Games
The concert continues, and the stars of this day are the children
Red Hill is a perfect opportunity to showcase the achievements of the past school year
Folk choreography will always remain in demand
The young vocalists are just as impressive as the young dancers

The crowd isn’t as large as on Winter Farewell, but the audience is absolutely delighted
An entire alley is dedicated to folk games
At one station, participants must lift a wooden disc using two strings
At another, they can try their luck at the English game “Shut the Box”
By the way, beginners traditionally get lucky!
Yet another station challenges visitors to run between swinging sacks
Volunteers release the sacks once the next applicant is ready
One can win with speed or with strategy — by timing the stops just right
Successfully testing the agility brings an unforgettable feeling
Meter‑Long Pancakes
Let’s rush to the pancake‑baking battle!
Pancake chefs are being recruited right from the crowd — volunteers are welcome
Participants spread the batter across the surface themselves and bake meter‑long pancakes
Two teams are working simultaneously
Experienced mentors guide the process so the pancake doesn’t turn out lumpy
Mastering the art of pancake baking is impossible without jokes and playful sayings
Just another ten minutes, and the freshly baked treat will be served to the festival guests
Any excess batter should be removed…
…otherwise it’ll be hard to flip the giant pancake neatly to the other side
A quirky piece of kitchen equipment comes to the rescue
A few more careful moves, and the pancake is ready to go back on the heat
Smooth, beautiful, and golden brown — it’s hard to resist tasting it!
The pancake chefs slice it, and volunteers serve the portions
One serving is about the size of two homemade pancakes
Undoubtedly, these are the moments worth capturing and remembering
Fair and Photo Zones
No festival would be complete without a fair
The Grand Samovar is filled with a special herbal tea blend
The artists have little rest today — and that makes each moment of rest really precious
Themed photo zones are set up all across the square
Some visitors will leave Red Hill with vibrant photos…
…and others — with elegant jewelry and souvenirs
Giant Scrambled Egg Show
The folk festivities are nearing their finale
Residents of Yalutorovsk and tourists are invited to a culinary show
The Cossacks will prepare an incredible scrambled egg dish using a thousand eggs!
It all starts with frying finely chopped lard
The pan is a massive three meters in diameter
It’s not often when people witness a project of this scale
The cracklings are nicely browned, and now it’s time for the eggs
They need to be spread evenly across the surface
It’s a responsible task — but a fun one
With the fire going strong, the dish will be ready in just a few minutes
There’s enough scrambled egg for everyone
A perfect option for anyone who hasn’t had lunch yet!
This honorable mission calls for speed
It’s important to serve everything while the dish is still hot
The guests are clearly enjoying it

The traditional games are coming to an end near the stage
The prizes are certificates from local stores — partners of the event
It’s nice to connect with the culture of your ancestors and get a gift for it
The final round dances are mostly led by young people
In the old days, this was a way to show yourself off and take a good look at others
