Spring Starts with “Awakening”
Every year since 2017, Omsk ice swimmers have marked the end of winter with the “Awakening” event. On a set day and hour, dozens of healthy lifestyle supporters simultaneously pour buckets of cold water over themselves and then head to the ice hole for a swim.
It’s a bold ritual that blends discipline, community, and the thrill of overcoming the cold — a true signal that spring is on its way.
Warmup

The event brings together around a hundred dedicated supporters of a healthy lifestyle

It’s important to warm up before the water procedures

The pace is set by Evgeny Zhitnov, the club’s long‑standing leader

Quite a few women are among the winter swimmers

The sunny weather lifts everyone’s spirits

Participants are eager to share their burst of energy with everyone who came to the park this morning

After the run, the warmup continues right at the event site

These simple exercises are familiar to everyone from childhood

And now, a ten‑second countdown is announced!
Cold Water Challenge

“Awakening” is wet, fun, and almost perfectly synchronized

This is exactly how winter should be bid farewell in Siberia

Many participants want to keep going — and that’s perfectly fine

Over the next two minutes, the remaining buckets are quickly emptied

Splashes are everywhere: by unwritten tradition, you’re allowed to douse anyone

The water cleanses, strengthens, and gives you strength!

The mass event is done, but the winter swimmers are waiting for the final touch

Evgeny Zhitnov puts the finishing point: he’s been overseeing everything and is the last one to pour water over himself

As head of the club, he proves by personal example that hardening the body is the key to an active life

Now this lightning‑fast city event can be considered complete

The group photo shows just how many Omsk residents are united by winter swimming

We’ll all meet again like this next year
Ice-Hole Swimming

The ice‑hole swims begin

Some people just take a quick dip, others swim the full 25 meters

As the ice swimmers joke, since the water is warmer than the air in winter, you can actually get warm in it!

Numerous park visitors have come to watch the swims

Only the ice in the background reminds us it’s March, not summer

Perhaps in the future, some of today’s onlookers will decide to swim year‑round

The Omsk ice swimmers inspire and fill everyone with energy and a love for life

The club’s training sessions take place four times a week

You’re not born a winter swimmer — you become one, right here in Siberia!
