Exploring the Traditions of Siberian Germans
World Tourism Day + a weekend trip = a great story! The Regional Tourist Information Center set up this route for Omsk bloggers to test and share. One group explored the museums of the Azovsky German National District to discover the heritage of an entire people living in Russia for three hundred years.
Alexandrovka Museum
The program kicks off in Alexandrovka, at the museum building styled as half‑timbered architecture
It recreates the interiors of typical homes of Siberian Germans at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries and from later periods
The details are worth a closer look: in an old pram passed down from a great‑grandmother sits a luxurious Soviet‑era doll
On the dish shelf are timeless items: simple enamel plates, clay milk vessels, and even an advertisement for a separator
A graceful century‑old sideboard made by an artisan sits alongside homemade furniture that may have been crafted by the house’s owner himself
The best dishes were displayed behind glass, like in a showcase
At some point, performers from the “Heimatland” folk vocal ensemble appear
They sing several cheerful songs in German
The entire tourist group is delighted
In terms of equipment and presentation quality, this rural museum is on par with city ones
The journey into the history of Russia’s Germans begins with Catherine II’s manifesto allowing foreigners to settle in Russian provinces as they wished
Guests are welcomed by Tatyana Renye, who long served as guide, curator, and director all in one
Visitors listen attentively while browsing the 1980 panorama of the village and other exhibits
The three‑story steam mill hasn’t survived, but a detailed model gives a good idea of what it looked like
The vivid storytelling about people’s lives makes the exhibition even more engaging
The museum’s founder is Alexander Wormsbecher (1914–2007), a school history teacher, local historian, amateur musician, and painter
Today, a prominent part of the exhibition is dedicated to him, including a published album of his ethnographic sketches
Thanks to Alexander Karlovich, the collection includes many old photographs that are still worth spending time studying
The artist’s original easel is on display together with a drawing made by his daughter in 1940
As a child, Alexander Wormsbecher was among the Volga Germans deported to Siberia
Despite the hardships he faced, his art celebrated the beauty of the world around him and the labor of ordinary people
Upstairs, guests are greeted by the founder’s self‑portrait painted in Alexandrovka in 1972
An entire hall serves as his art gallery, where each painting holds its rightful place
And each work reveals the artist’s signature style and genuine respect for his subjects — like in “The First Harvest” from 1984
The second floor also highlights other regional artists

The displays tell the story of how the German National District was established in 1992 following a referendum
The group is welcomed by guide Maria Bossert, whose own family also lived through the deportation from the Volga region

As they left their homelands, people believed they would be able to return someday — but that was never meant to be
On the second floor, cozy period interiors are recreated, much like in the museum of Alexandrovka
The rubel served as a traditional “iron” and was common in many households, not just German ones
Figurines of Russian fairy‑tale characters and Pavel Bazhov’s tales mark the typical 1950s–60s Soviet homely vibe
In their spare time, German women created true handicraft masterpieces: sewing, embroidery, lace‑making, and fabric punching
Each item is a unique, one‑of‑a‑kind piece of art
Pattern diagrams were passed down to younger generations, teaching girls the household crafts
During the Soviet era, inspiration often came from the pages of fashion magazines
By tradition, next to the married couple’s bed there’s a family photo and a spruch — a saying embroidered by the young housewife
“Red Moscow” perfume was a particular favorite among German girls; interestingly, the modern remake smells just like the original
Another room takes you back to the 1970s and 80s: a woolen carpet hangs on the wall, and the vintage “Deer” carpet covers the sofa
A retro radio‑and‑record player and trendy records show the cultural tastes of the owners
A typical side table of the era: to call the airport information desk, look up the number in a phone book beforehand
Wedding Ceremony
The tour wraps up with a look at German wedding traditions
The “Glöckchen” noise ensemble will help recreate a fragment of the ritual
And so it begins: guests form a circle dance to the lively sounds of a German polka
The “newlyweds” are chosen from among the tourists — this time, it’s the couple Lyudmila and Alexey Paryginy
Removing the bridal veil is the climax of the wedding: only a relative or a close friend was allowed to do it
The headscarf is a symbol of a married woman: it was tied so that not a single strand of hair showed, for only her husband was meant to admire her hair
The performers add a distinctly authentic national flavor to the whole process
Vladimir German, the leader of the noise ensemble, stands on the left
Some of these simple “musical instruments” could be found in almost every household
A tourist jokingly calls for a kiss, and the couple happily obliges
At the end of the ritual, the veil and wreath are passed to one of the guests — chosen blindfolded
According to tradition, the person who receives the veil from the bride will soon have their own wedding

Finally, the group is invited to a summer house where they bake aromatic waffles
The old cast‑iron waffle iron has a special mission today: to impress the bloggers
