Battle for Moscow: Seen Through the Ages from Siberia
On the eve of National Unity Day, the Military-Historical Festival “1612. Saviors of the Fatherland” brought together 160 participants from across the country. For the fifth time, the banks of the Irtysh River near Omsk Fortress witnessed a dramatic reenactment of the clash between Russian militia and Polish invaders.
The events depicted by the reenactors mark a crucial turning point in pre-Petrine Russia. The liberation of Moscow put an end to the Time of Troubles and led to the election of a new tsar by representatives of all estates.
Preparations
Late fall Omsk welcomes fresh snow
Everything is ready for a large-scale theatrical performance
The necessary fortifications have been erected on the bank of the Irtysh near Omsk Fortress
Its Tobolsk Gate, opening the way to the river, has never known a siege
In 2025, the military-historical festival brought together clubs from across Siberia
Reenactors from Moscow, the Moscow Region, and Bashkiria joined their Siberian counterparts

Visitors are told about the root causes of the conflict and the balance of forces
November weather adds to the challenge: the garish Poles inspect their weapons
Facing them is the Russian militia, positioned to the right of the audience
In the early 17th century, volunteers rose to defend the Fatherland on a mass scale for the first time
It was then that people came to realize their responsibility for the fate of their homeland
The militia under Minin and Pozharsky included professional soldiers, Cossacks, musketeer units, and cannon crews
They are ready to reclaim their land by all available means
About 8,000 warriors from various towns gathered near Moscow in the autumn of 1612
Demonstrations
The Polish forces also included mercenaries: Lithuanians, Germans, and Hungarians

Their synchronization is less than perfect — much as it was 400 years ago
Handling firearms of that era requires extensive preparation
While waiting for the command to fire, there is time to examine the Polish costumes
Gunshots over the Irtysh river sound like rolls of thunder
Russians have something to answer with — still in presentation mode

Battle Reenactment
And now, the battle begins!
The Polish troops advance
Skirmishes become frequent and chaotic
The invaders hold the initiative — at least at first
Something is happening on every square meter of the riverbank
At times, the entire battlefield is shrouded in clouds of smoke
On the outskirts of the city, the Poles even manage to achieve local success
However, Russians find it easier to navigate the urban terrain
Still, it’s known that on different days, the battles lasted several hours
The main events took place in Zamoskvorechye
Many modern reenactors could easily fit into the old engravings
Not every clash went in favor of the militia — they had to retreat at times
And now, Russians take up new defensive lines
They don’t have many cannons, but they are formidable weapons
The Polish army keeps pressing forward
After a series of setbacks, the militiamen vow to fight without sparing themselves
The Hetman continues to lose his best infantrymen
Morale is so high that the occupiers are even pelted with cabbage!
Of course, a 40‑minute reenactment can’t replace history textbooks
But it can bring the warriors’ images to life…
…and fully immerse the audience in the atmosphere of that confrontation
With powerful visual “cues”, the brain amplifies the impressions to the maximum
We know that in the finale, Russians “pressed upon the Hetman’s camp with all their might”
In the end, the Polish‑Lithuanian garrison in the Kremlin was forced to surrender
After the Battle
Now comes the well‑deserved rest!
Participants exchange opinions about the fifth staging for National Unity Day
For the next half hour, they’ll be talking with visitors to Omsk Fortress
Everyone is eager to ask questions…

Indeed, you can meet such characters only a few times a year
Omsk has already become a magnet for reenactors from many different regions
This is thanks both to the scale of the festivals held here…
…and to the traditional hospitality of the people of Omsk
